Character introduction

1.Eugene Choi (played by Lee Byung-hun)

Choi Yoo-jin (played by Kim Min-jung)During the time when the caste system was still in place in Joseon, Eugene Choi, who was born as a son of a slave, lost his parents due to the atrocities committed by his owner in his childhood and received help from American missionaries to escape to the United States. After living in America and becoming a soldier in the US military, he returns to his homeland during the tumultuous 1900s as a US officer. There, he coincidentally meets Go Ae-shin, who is involved in independence activities.

Although he was born as a son of a slave during the time of the caste system in Joseon, Eugene Choi lost his parents due to the atrocities committed by his owner when he was young and went to the United States with the help of American missionaries. After living in the US and becoming a US soldier, he returns to his homeland during the tumultuous 1900s as a US military officer. By chance, he meets Go Ae-shin, who is involved in the independence movement. Despite being from the lowest class in Joseon's social hierarchy, he becomes a free individual upon his return. He maintains his surname "Choi" as "Choi" represents "Choi" in Korean, but he keeps the Americanized pronunciation of "Choi" as "Choi" instead of changing it to the Korean pronunciation. At that time, Joseon was a period of influx of Western culture and ideas, and "Eugene Choi" represents people who exist outside the caste system or the new social order that began to emerge in Joseon.

2.Go Ae-shin (played by Kim Tae-ri)

Go Ae-shin is the granddaughter of a respected nobleman's family in Korea, who still receives great admiration from her surroundings due to the lingering class system in the early 1900s. Unlike many dramas or movies where high-ranking individuals are often portrayed as villains, her household is a true noble family with both honor and wealth, and she is highly regarded by those around her. However, she herself is a daring and courageous individual with a strong belief that she must protect her homeland amidst the turmoil of the times. She actively participates in the independence movement and is highly curious, never fearing to learn new things.

3.Kim Hee-sung (played by Byun Yo-han)

When Eugene Choi, the fiance of Go Ae-shin and the grandson of a wealthy family, lived in Korea in the past, he was the grandson of a rich household and lived with high expectations, but he wanted to break away from his family after learning how they had accumulated their wealth. He eventually left for Japan to study abroad and did not return for a long time. Despite his family's demands to return to his hometown, he eventually returned to Korea, but he stayed at Hotel Glory instead of with his family. However, upon his return, he finds himself drawn to Go Ae-shin, whom he had previously been engaged to without even knowing her face.

4.Gu Dong-mae (played by Yoo Yeon-seok)

Because of his social status, it was difficult for him to achieve anything in Korea, so he left his homeland and went to Japan to succeed in his own domain. He is Korean, but he tries not to think about it because he believes that his country has given him nothing. However, if there is one good memory from his childhood in Korea, it is the memories related to Go Ae-shin. He still likes her, but he realizes that she only thinks of him as a childhood memory. He expresses his feelings in a somewhat twisted way.

5.Kudo hina (played by Kim Min-jung)

The woman was sold into marriage like a commodity to an elderly Japanese man because of her Korean father, who valued money and power. Fortunately, she inherited her husband's wealth after he passed away, but her father tried to take it away from her as well. Refusing to give up her inheritance, she adopted a Japanese name and lived her life as a Japanese citizen instead of a Korean one. She eventually became the owner of the largest hotel in Korea, Hotel Glory. One day, Eugene Choi, a black-haired American who, like her, was a foreigner in his own country, appeared at her house.

6. Mori Takashi (played by Kim Nam-hee)

The friend had a pre-existing friendship with Eugene Choi in the United States, but upon meeting again in Korea, their relationship turned hostile. The friend is now a Japanese officer, while Eugene Choi is an American who is protecting a woman involved in the independence movement.
