'Gujiga', an ancient song handed down from mouth to mouth

"Gujiga" is a folk song that has been passed down for centuries in Korea. No one knows who wrote it, how it was passed down, or what it means. There are many different theories about the song, but the most popular one is that it is a story about the birth of Suro, the founder of the Gaya confederacy.

 The story goes like this:

In 42 AD, on the third day of the third month, a strange sound was heard coming from the north. The people who heard the sound gathered, but they could not see who was making it. The voice asked, "Who is here?" The people answered, "We are here." The voice asked again, "Where am I?" The people answered, "You are at Guji." The voice said, "I have been sent by heaven to found a new country here. Go to the top of the mountain, dig up the earth, and sing this song:

Turtle, turtle, show your head.

If you do not, I will cook you and eat you.

The people did as they were told, and six golden eggs fell from the sky. When they opened the eggs, they found six boys inside. These boys became the kings of the six Gaya kingdoms, and Suro was one of them. According to this story, Gujiga was a song that was sung to found a country. In fact, some people believe that the story is actually a ritual that was performed to ensure the birth of a great leader. The song is still sung today, and it is often used as a prayer for good luck.

'Gujiga' in "Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938"

In "Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938", Goujiga is used as a spell to weaken Dongbangsak and reveal his weaknesses. The song is effective because the target of the spell is a turtle, and the contents of the song are similar to a threat. This is a very different use of Gujiga than what is seen in history, but it is understandable given the fact that the drama is a fantasy genre.
